British businessman Gordon Williams had a big surprise for a waitress at a bar in New York City. At the end of the evening he left her a tip of 10 000. The waitress Gloria Latrobe was working at Top Club near Times Square in the centre of New York for a few weeks only. She is studying psychology at New York University. Miss Latrobe said Gordon spent the evening at the club with some friends. It was his last night in New York. We talked a lot. He s interested in psychology too. He gave me the money to pay for my last year of college. And what did she do when she got the tip Miss Latrobe laughed. I called the manager. The manager of Top Club Peter Hay said Of course we thought it was a mistake and the guy wanted to give a 10 tip. We asked him to sign a paper promising to pay 10 000. He did that. T m really happy said Miss Latrobe. It s like a fairy tale when a prince walks into your life. Newspaper story 2 I gave waitress that 10 000 tip - and now my wife wants to know why. Gloria Latrobe has been on coast-to-coast television in the US telling the story again and again. The day after she got the tip Miss Latrobe described Mr Williams as a very nice English gentleman. Even now she says T hope his family isn t angry with him. But there is a happy ending to the story after all. Top Club in New York were so pleased that the clubs name was in every newspaper in Britain and the United States that they have given Gloria
