| 7 Do Plant Waxes Make Insect Attachment Structures Dirty Experimental Evidence for the Contamination Hypothesis Elena Gorb and Stanislav Gorb CONTENTS 7.1 Introduction.147 7.2 Material and Methods.149 7.2.1 Plant Surfaces and Other Substrates.149 7.2.2 Model Insect Species and Experiments.149 7.3 Results. 150 7.3.1 Pruinose Plant Surfaces.150 7.3.2 Adhesive Pads of the Beetle Chrysolina Fastuosa.150 7.3.3 Pad Contamination.150 7.4 Discussion . 155 7.4.1 Contaminating Effect of Crystalline Epicuticular Waxes on Insect Attachment Devices. 155 7.4.2 Dependence of Pad Contamination on Wax Micromorphology.158 Acknowledgments.160 References.160 7.1 INTRODUCTION In many higher plants primary surfaces of aerial organs are covered with crystalline epicuticular waxes. An extremely thick wax layer usually appears as pruinescence on the stems leaves and fruits in various plants 1-3 . Generally waxes were reported to be important for interactions between plant surfaces and the environment 147 Copyright 2006 Taylor Francis Group LLC 148 Ecology and Biomechanics 3 4 . It has been previously suggested that wax coverage on plant surfaces decreases locomotory activity of insects and this prevents insects from robbing nectar and other resources 5-8 protects plants against insects and herbivores 7 9-19 and precludes the escape of insects from traps in carnivorous plants 7 13 20-24 . A few studies have experimentally shown that the wax crystalline coverage affects insect attachment. It was found for several insect species that they can attach well to smooth substrates without wax or with wax bloom removed whereas they slip from the waxy surfaces 8 11-13 16 19 22 23 25-27 . The experiments with various plant substrates 99 surfaces of 83 plant species among them smooth hairy feltlike pruinose and glandular ones and the beetle Chrysolina fastuosa showed that the insects were not able to attach to any of 17 pruinose surfaces whereas they performed well on all other surface types 28 .
