| Appendix 1 Influence of harvesting time on rice cracking Influence of harvesting time on rice cracking Introduction Harvesting timeliness plays an important role in controlling rice cracking. In order to determine the actual post harvest losses mainly due to rice cracking thorough experiments were conducted during three harvesting seasons rainy 2006 dry and rainy 2007 . The results of dry season 2008 experiments presented in this report is an attempt to systematically collect the data based on field experimentations in the fourth consecutive harvesting season. The main factor in this study during the collection of data was harvesting time- before and after grain maturity. The objective of this experiment is to evaluate the effects of harvesting time on the level of rice cracking and then select the optimal harvesting time for various rice varieties in Spring-Summer crop in Mekong River Delta Vietnam. Materials and Methods Experiments were carried out at Tan Phat A cooperative Kien Giang Province during March 2008. Three common rice varieties cultivated in this cooperative namely OM2517 IR50404 and AG24 were selected for field experiments. The grain maturity date of OM2517 and AG24 are in the range of 85-90 days while that of AG24 are 90-95 days. Basically the maturity date is defined as the harvesting date planned by the farmer which is fitted well with the physiological maturity time given by the extension centre. The experimental design consisted of the treatments corresponding to the harvesting times prior and after maturity date of selected rice varieties. Samples were pre-treated before being transferred to lab for grain cracking test. Rice cracking level caused of harvesting time was evaluated based on statistical data. The experiment consisted of 7 treatments six days prior and six days after maturity date MD with a two-day interval. Harvesting time was the main factor of the experiment. Experiments were designed in RCBD method. Each treatment had 5 blocks .
