What could not have been expected is that these attacks everywhere ended in retreat and that they left the Catholic Church stronger than it had been for centuries. Political Catholicism arose from a renascence of religious Catholicism. Looking back we see not merely reassertion of the Catholic standpoint by people who had never abandoned it we see also a change of attitudes among people who had around 1900 it was a common observation to make that in a Catholic family the old and elderly were laicist and liberal and the youngsters believers and clerical.
