Creating an exception object and handing it to the runtime system is called throwing an exception. 3 Thursday, August 9, 12 What is an exception? ✦ When an exception is thrown, the runtime system attempts to find something to handle it. ✦ A set of possible “somethings” is the ordered list of methods that had been called to get to the method where the error occurred. ✦ This list of methods is known as call stack. 4 Thursday, August 9, 12 What is an exception? ✦ The runtime system searches the call stack for a method that can handle the exception. ✦ ✦ ✦ The block of code that handles the exception is called exception handler.
