Examining conversation provides an excellent opportunity to look at verbal and nonverbal messages as they’re used in day-to-day communications, and thus serves as a useful culmination for this second part of the text. This chapter explains the principles of conversation, one of the most important forms of conversation known as self-disclosure, and some of your everyday conversational situations (such as small talk and apologizing). Guidelines are offered throughout the chapter for making conversation more satisfying and more effective. Principles of Conversation Describe the major principles that govern the conversation process. Although conversation is an everyday process and one we seldom think about, it is, like most forms of communication, governed by several principles. The Principle of Process It’s convenient to divide the process of conversation into chunks or stages and to view each stage as requiring a choice about what you’ll say and how you’ll say it.
