Here by image recovery we refer to two classes of problems image restoration and image reconstruction. In image restoration an estimate of the original image is obtained from a blurred and noise-corrupted image. In image reconstruction an image is generated from measurements of various physical quantities such as X-ray energy in CT and photon counts in single photon emission tomography SPECT and positron emission tomography PET . Image restoration has been used to restore pictures in remote sensing astronomy medical imaging art history studies . see 1 and more recently it has been used to remove picture artifacts due to image compression . see 2 and 3 . While primarily used in biomedical imaging 4 image reconstruction has also found applications in materials studies 5 . Due to the inherent randomness in the scene and imaging process images and noise are often best modeled as multidimensional random processes called random fields. Consequently image recovery becomes the problem of statistical inference. This amounts to estimating certain unknown parameters of a probability density function pdf .
