TAILIEUCHUNG - Inorganic salt supported potassium permanganate promoted oxidation of aniline into azobenzene

Potassium permanganate absorbed on copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate oxidizes aniline into azobenzene under heterogenous conditions. Azoxybenzene is a minor by-product. Under solventless reaction conditions, the oxidation does not take place owing to predominant complex formation between copper(II) and aniline. The influence of the nature of the solvent as well as the replacement of copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate by several other inorganic salt hydrates on the potassium permanganate promoted oxidation of aniline is described. | Journal of Chemistry Vol. 45 Special issue P. 105 -110 2007 INORGANIC SALT SUPPORTED POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE PROMOTED OXIDATION OF ANILINE INTO AZOBENZENE Received 13 December 2006 THI XuAN THI Luu2 PETER CHRISTENSEN1 FRITZ Duus1 AND THACH NGQC LE2 department of Life Sciences and Chemistry Roskilde University Denmark 2University of Natural Sciences National University of Hochiminh City summary Potassium permanganate absorbed on copper II sulfate pentahydrate oxidizes aniline into azobenzene under heterogenous conditions. I - INTRODUCTION The oxidation of aromatic amines to produce azo compounds is of current interest and has been reported to take place by means of several types of oxidants 1 - 17 . Up-to-date reagents for this oxidation are supposed to be kind to the environments as well as highly efficient with respect to reaction time and yield. Potassium permanganate an oxidizing agent used in organic chemistry for over a century is one of the most versatile and vigorous of the commonly used oxidants and it has been extensively employed in acidic alkaline and neutral media 18 . Thus potassium permanganate oxidation of aniline supported by copper II sulfate pentahydrate or iron II sulfate heptahydrate was found to produce azo products in high yield 19 - 21 scheme below . However the role played by copper II sulfate pentahydrate as well as other supporting metal salt hydrates in the potassium permanganate oxidation reactions of aromatic amines has not been clarified. This paper reports on research carried out with the intentions to understand and hopefully also improve with .
