That there should be such a thing as the philosophy of sport, and a well-established tradition of scholarship in it, surprises most academics I That there might be philosophers, professionally interested in adventure, risk and risk-taking may well, however, raise more than a few eyebrows. While many such activities provide a sense of closeness to nature and heighten our awareness of the unpredictability of the outdoors they typically require the participant to put themselves at genuine risk of injury or even death. The time is ripe for a critical and reflective assessment of this phenomenon from rigorous philosophical perspectives.
