TAILIEUCHUNG - The Selection, Use and Maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Some reciprocating open-type compressors used with water cooled systems incorporate a cylinder head cooling feature in the form of a water circuit through the compressor head. Supply water enters this before entering the condenser (see Figure 16). A rapid indicating thermometer is recommended for taking water temper- atures because the water regulating valve responds to the operating head pressure and will vary the temperature of the water as it modulates. It is also necessary, when adjusting the water regulator, to be able to take inlet and outlet temperatures quickly. Locate the thermometer probes tightly to the pipework to ensure good thermal conductivity, note the average inlet temper- ature and calculate. | University of St. Andrews The Selection Use and Maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment PPE Environmental Health and Safety Services Revised October 2008 Selection Use and Maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment PPE Contents 1 introduction . 2 2 status of this code . 2 3 applications and limitations .2 4 WHAT is PPE . 2 5 duties and responsibilities . 3 HoS U . 3 Supervisors Principal Investigators . 3 Individual Users . all staff and students . 3 Liability. 4 6 guidance notes . 5 Assessment of risk. 6 The Provision and Selection of PPE. 7 Information Instruction and Training. 8 PPE and Designated Safety Zones. 9 Maintenance Testing and replacement. 9 Record Keeping. 10 7 guidance on the selection of specific ppe. 11 Hand Protection. 11 Respiratory Protective Equipment RPE . 14 Eyes and face protection . 18 Hearing protection. 19 Foot protection . 21 Head Protection. 22 Body Protection. 22 8 general resources and further reading . 25 APPENDICIES . 27 1 1 Introduction During many every day tasks including research teaching catering or Estates maintenance University staff and students may be exposed to chemical physical biological or environmental hazards. The aim of the University is to ensure that where persons are exposed to hazards they are provided with and trained in the use of personal protective equipment PPE in accordance with the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992. However PPE should only be used following an appropriate risk assessment and as a last means of controlling the hazard. Separate policies exist covering risk assessment and hazard control. This booklet provides guidance on the PPE regulations and information on the responsibilities of various individuals within the University. 2 Status of this code This Code of Practice and standards is part of the University s arrangements for bringing into effect the Health and Safety Policy of the University .
