TAILIEUCHUNG - HUMAN RIGHTS IN LIBERIA'S RUBBER PLANTATIONS: TAPPING INTO THE FUTURE

Already in the old times, the methods of tapping the rubber tree and processes for making crude articles from latex had been developed. Primitive technology for obtaining latex had been used nearly three and a half centuries after the discovery of rubber in the West. Once technical improvement of rubber tapping took place, the use of rubber increased; but the overall consumption of rubber was not greatly changed during that time. The merged civilization of the East and the West made their first big joint contribution to rubber technology when vulcanization was discovered in 1839. . | United Nations w Nations Unies MISSION IN LIBERIA MISSION AU LIBERIA Human Rights in Liberia s Rubber Plantations Tapping into the Future May 2006 UN MIL HQ Tubman Boulevard s inker Monrovia Liberia 2 Business groups trades unions and other non-governmental organisations NGOs can often speak for a community especially where individuals can find it difficult to make their voice heard or are unwilling to speak out. People in Africa aspire to decent jobs in the same way as do people everywhere with fair rates of pay and good health and safety. Core labour standards can help to achieve this. Clearly the responsibility for managing resources lies with the state. But the international community also has a role to play in maintaining high standards of governance. If it does so in its own activities - and demands it in the activities of private sector agents like the multinational companies active in developing countries - then it will be better positioned to encourage similar high standards in the way African countries manage the cash from their natural resources. Developed country governments company shareholders and consumers should pressure on companies to be more transparent in their activities in developing countries and to adhere to international codes and standards for behaviour.
