The CNX IT index was the biggest gainer across sectoral indices up over 8 per cent in the quarter while CNX FMCG and CNX Pharma were up per cent and per cent respectively. The IT sector benefitted from the sharp depreciation of the rupee in recent months which enhanced the earning prospects of the export oriented sector. Further equity funds have continuously increased their exposure to FMCG and pharma sectors over the past four quarters. Historically these defensive sectors limit the downside in returns in falling markets. However these sectors are trading at higher than their historical price to earnings P E ratios.
