Dr. Lederberg s death on February 2 2008 marked the departure of a central figure of modern science. It is in his honor that the Forum hosted this public workshop on microbial evolution and co-adaptation on May 20 and 21 2008. Along with the late Robert Shope and Stanley C. Oaks Jr. Lederberg organized and co-chaired the 1992 Institute of Medicine IOM study Emerging Infections Microbial Threats to Health in the United .
