The baby was given what is for the Hebrew people a very common name, the name Joshua, but it also has an important meaning. It means Jaweh, or Jehovah, or God is Salvation. Then there are these wonderful words as Gabriel goes on, “He will be great.” Just think what she must have felt hearing these amazing words from an angel. This is the one we usually hear the most about where it says The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph. She was not married she was single and betrothed means engaged. An engagement was looked on as a very serious thing in all ancient eastern societies. In our church the whole community participates in the joy of an engagement and marriage. It s something that we celebrate all together. When an engagement came about in the ancient societies or in eastern places where people lived farther apart what happened is that the two families signed a contract and they came to an agreement. That made a big difference for both families. The bride s family loses a girl she leaves her family and they lose all the work she does. The family of the groom pays the bride s family for the loss of the girl. This is called a dowry. It
