Group Art Therapy has been wideiy used as an adjunctive treatment Tor peopie with schizophrenia but there have been Tew attempts to examine its effects and cost effectiveness has not been examined. The MATISSE study aims to evaiuate the ciinicai and cost effectiveness of group Art Therapy for peopie with schizophrenia. Method Design The MATISSE study is a three-arm paraiiei group pragmatic randomised controiied triai of referrai to group Art Therapy pius standard care referrai to an attention controi activity group plus standard care or standard care aione. Study participants were recruited from inpatient and community-based mentai heaith and sociai care services at four centres in Engiand and Northern Ireiand. Participants were aged over 18 years with a ciinicai diagnosis of schizophrenia confirmed by an examination of case notes using operationaiised criteria. Participants were then randomised via an independent and remote teiephone randomisation service using permuted stacKed biocKs stratified by site. Art Therapy and activity groups were made avaiiabie to participants once a weeK for up to 12 .
