Ellipses and Stick Figures When you walk to the whiteboard and start drawing pictures of people using the system it is very natural to draw a stick figure for the people and ellipses or boxes for the use cases they are calling upon. Label the stick figure with the title of the actor and the ellipse with the title of the use case. The information is the same as the actor-goal list but the presentation is different. The diagrams can be used as a table of far all is all fine and normal. The trouble starts when you or your readers believe that the diagrams define the functional requirements for the system.
