DISTINGUISHING ADVERBS FROM ADJECTIVES Many words in English function both as adjectives and adverbs. The surest way to tell whether a particular word is an adjective or an adverb in a given sentence is to determine what its function is in the sentence. For this you must go back to the fundamental distinction between an adjective and an adverb adjectives modify nouns and pronouns adverbs modify everything else.
