The reason for these differences is unknown. One possible explanation could be the existence of different precursory lesions at each of the areas. We should remember that the transition area is the one that develops benign prostate hyperplasia and so the carcinomas in this area coincide with hyperplasia changes. There has been some speculation that certain forms of micro-glandular hyperplasia with atypia atypical adenomatous hyperplasia AAH may play a role as cancer precursors 36 .
