TÓM TẮT Nghiên cứu này được thực hiện bởi các nhà nghiên cứu của Đại học James Cook (Australia) và Đại học Cần Thơ (Việt Nam), phối hợp với Sở Thủy sản Việt Nam. Khảo sát được thực hiện trong suốt sông Mekong Việt 5-13 tháng 5 năm 2005, bao gồm tổng cộng 486,3 km của cuộc khảo sát thuyền trong 42,25 giờ. Phỏng vấn bằng cách sử dụng bảng câu hỏi đã được tiến hành với 84 người cao tuổi, ngư dân alongsides của các con sông Tiền và sông Hậu. Surveys were carried out throughout the Vietnamese Mekong River from 5-13 May 2005 covering a total of km of boat survey in hours. Interviews using the questionnaires were conducted with 84 elderly people and fishermen alongsides of Tien and Hau rivers. A total of 3 062 boats were observed averaging 7 boats km. The most numerous boats were cargo 43 fishing boats and long-tail 15 . There are very high levels of boat traffic and fishing activities throughout the upper Vietnamese River system. River dolphins were reportedly regularly sighted by local villagers before the 1970s. During the surveys no dolphins were sighted one whale skeleton and one photograph of a dead Irrawaddy dolphin were observed. It appears that Mekong River Irrawaddy dolphins are now locally extinct from the Vietnamese Mekong. The main causes of decline of Irrawaddy dolphins in the Vietnamese Mekong River were recorded as 1 accidental catch in gillnets 2 over-fishing 3 being shot or bombed 4 directly caught in seine nets by Muslims 5 electric fishing and 6 siltation and pollution of critical habitats. Local people have a very favorable attitude towards conserving natural aquatic resources including Irrawaddy dolphins in Vietnamese Mekong due to their benefits. The frequent reports of Irrawaddy dolphins around Hau estuary representing a resident population that needs to be given further studies.
