MIT researchers1 4 conducted a cost study survey of more than 50 parts fabricated by three major aerospace firms. All parts were hand lay-up of prepreg material followed by autoclave cure. The parts weights ranged from to 300 lb and included various types of constructions from simple skins and channels to more complex parts made by co-curing mechanical fasteners. Full-depth honeycomb and panelized ribbed construction were also included. The parts investigated were well down the learning curve exceeding 100 or 200 units. The following conclusions can be drawn from their study. 1. Despite very high direct materials cost labor costs were the highest cost source. Labor costs can be divided into hand lay-up of prepreg bagging preparation assembly of inserts and fasteners etc. For simple structures hand lay-up contributed the maximum cost.
