Until the second half of the 20th century, human development on earth has been largely carried out without undue strain to the eco-system. United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development (the Brundtland Commission) Report “Our Common Future” in 1987 defines sustainable development as “Development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. The Brundtland Commission led to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and Agenda 21. A Decade Later, the World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD) was held in Johannesburg 26 August-4 September 2002.
