This is the second occasion that the Agricultural Outlook report has been prepared jointly by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The report draws on the commodity, policy and country expertise of both Organisations in providing a medium term assessment of future prospects in the major world agricultural commodity markets. The OECD is also at the forefront of efforts to understand and to help governments respond to new developments and concerns such as corporate governance the information economy and the challenges of an ageing population. The Organisation provides a setting where governments can compare policy experiences seek answers to common problems identify good practice and work to co-ordinate domestic and international policies. The Commission of the European Communities takes part in the work of the OECD. OECD Publishing disseminates widely the results of the Organisation s statistics gathering and research on economic social and environmental issues as well as the conventions guidelines and standards agreed by its members. THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION FAO OF THE UNITED NATIONS The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations leads international efforts to defeat hunger. FAO s mandate is to raise levels of nutrition improve agricultural productivity better the lives of rural populations and contribute to the growth of the world economy.
