In this highly competitive labour market, both women and men may find it impossible to ensure enough income to keep their families alive and healthy in the long term while insisting that their health be protected in the short term. This publication provides a global overview of gender issues in research, policies and programmes on work and health and highlights some specific issues for women. In particular, it will examine some apparent incompatibilities between women’s struggles for economic and social equality and their need to protect their health. . | Issue Paper March 2005 PREVENTION AND PROMOTION WOMEN S HEALTH c4 e NIHCM FOUNDATION NI1HCM Foundation March 2005 Executive Summary Improving the health status of women will require improved use of preventive health care services and health care behaviors. Understanding the current status of women s health and aspects of women s health care experience in the United States can help clinicians take steps to expand utilization of preventive services and to empower women to make better and more informed choices about their health. This overview examines data on selected conditions influencingwomen smorbidityandmortality discusses disease prevention and detection and presents recent guidelines. The topics covered were selected primarily on the basis of their prevalence among women and the important role of early detection and prevention in influencing the health status of women. Following an Introduction in Section I the topics highlighted are organized as follows SECTION II DISEASES AND CONDITIONS - Cardiovascular disease breast and cervical cancer diabetes mental illness and depression osteoporosis and obesity. SECTION III HEALTH BEHAVIORS - Diet and nutrition physical activity and cigarette smoking. SECTION IV SPECIAL ISSUES - Issues related to prenatal care and sexually transmitted diseases. Each of these sections includes recommendations for prevention techniques or guidelines for screening taken from sources such as the Institute of Medicine IOM the Surgeon General s office and the United States Preventive Services Task Force USPSTF . A brief overview of the USPSTF is presented in Appendix A. The final section of the paper includes a discussion of selected initiatives in women s health and Appendix B provides a resource table for further information on various health prevention programs. 11. Diseases and Conditions As noted above several diseases and conditions are described in Section II of the paper. Highlights of each of the diseases and conditions discussed .
