Each year Healthgrades evaluates gender-specific outcomes concerning women for cardiovascular care bone and joint health maternity care and gynecologic surgery. Women present a unique treatment challenge for the healthcare system in all of these areas which span the spectrum of care throughout a women s lifetime. Women often present with heart conditions at an older age than men and may present with no history of the disease. In addition women may have less specific symptoms that seem unrelated to cardiovascular disease and heart Research has consistently shown that women fare worse than men in the treatment of common cardiovascular diseases they are more likely to experience delays in care and they are less likely to receive recommended preventive and followup care than their male 3 4 In addition to cardiovascular care and bone and joint health Healthgrades also evaluates patient outcomes in maternity care and gynecologic procedures for a complete view of women s unique care needs. For many women hospitalization due to childbirth is their first experience with inpatient care. To ensure that mothers-to-be and their families are able to make the best decision regarding their care it is important to have comparative information about the quality differences that exist among hospital maternity care programs. For the first part of this study Healthgrades analyzed in-hospital complication and mortality rates among 16 of the most common diagnoses and procedures among women 65 and older and identified 176 of the nation s 4 783 hospitals that excelled in the treatment of women. Healthgrades designated these 176 hospitals as Women s Health Excellence Award hospitals. From 2008 to 2010 if all hospitals performed at the level of Women s Health Excellence .
