Women now make up nearly 50 of our workforce are a growing number of breadwinners in their families and are the majority of students in our colleges and graduate schools. American women own 30 of small businesses which generate trillion a year in sales. Since 1962 women s participation in the labor market has risen by 20 percentage points while the United States Gross Domestic Product GDP has more than quadrupled. And according to a report by McKinsey if the United States raised female labor participation rates to the average participation rate of the top 10 states our economy would add million women workers the equivalent of a 3-4 increase in GDP. 1 Consequently when women still face barriers to participation in the workplace and marketplace that is not just a women s issue. When women still make just 77 cents for every dollar men make or have to pay more for their health care than men that hurts entire families who cannot afford to lose part of their income each month. When a job does not offer adequate family leave or sick leave that also hurts men who need to help care for a new baby or an ailing parent. When women entrepreneurs continue to have a harder time accessing the capital they need to start and sustain their businesses create new jobs and sell new products that hurts our entire economy. And when approximately two million women fall victim to domestic violence each year that costs our nation 8 billion annually in lost productivity and health care expenses and results in the loss of 8 million paid days of work a year. The statistics are very clear The success of American women is critical for the success of American families and the American economy.
