The base oil in grease will oxidize in the same way as lubricating oil of a similar type. The thickener will also oxidize but is usually less prone to oxidation than the base oil. So anti-oxidant additive must be selected to match the individual grease. Their primary function is to protect the grease during storage and extend the service life especially at high temperatures.
