TAILIEUCHUNG - CD44+/CD24- breast cancer cells exhibit enhanced invasive properties: an early step necessary for metastasis

Positivity rates appear low in these populations, around 4 to 7 percent, except for a 32 percent positivity rate for VILI in Angola. Investigators noted that many test providers were not able to distinguish the color changes seen in VILI-positive cases from irrelevant conditions such as ectropion or inflammation, in spite of repeated training. This may be a limitation of VILI in these settings. Another challenge identified in the studies was providing appropriate treatment. In the Tanzania study, only 21 of 33 women with CIN2/3 received treatment, while in the Angola study, 374 women were treated with cryotherapy or loop. | Available online http content 8 5 R59 Research article CD44 CD24- breast cancer cells exhibit enhanced invasive properties an early step necessary for metastasis Carol Sheridan1 Hiromitsu Kishimoto1 Robyn K Fuchs2 Sanjana Mehrotra3 Poornima Bhat-Nakshatri4 5 Charles H Turner6 Robert Goulet Jr1 Sunil Badve3 and Harikrishna Nakshatri1 4 5 7 Open Access department of Surgery Indiana University School of Medicine Indianapolis IN 46202 USA department of Anatomy and Cell Biology Indiana University School of Medicine Indianapolis IN 46202 USA department of Pathology Indiana University School of Medicine Indianapolis IN 46202 USA 4Walther Oncology Center Indiana University School of Medicine Indianapolis IN 46202 USA 5Walther Cancer Institute Indianapolis IN 46208 USA 6Orthopedics Research Labs Indiana University School of Medicine Indianapolis IN 46202 USA department Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Indiana University School of Medicine Indianapolis IN 46202 USA Corresponding author Harikrishna Nakshatri hnakshat@ Received 17 Jul 2006 Revisions requested 23 Aug 2006 Revisions received 24 Sep 2006 Accepted 24 Oct 2006 Published 24 Oct 2006 Breast Cancer Research 2006 8 R59 doi bcr1610 This article is online at http content 8 5 R59 2006 Sheridan et al. licensee BioMed Central Ltd. Abstract Introduction A subpopulation CD44 CD24- of breast cancer cells has been reported to have stem progenitor cell properties. The aim of this study was to investigate whether this subpopulation of cancer cells has the unique ability to invade home and proliferate at sites of metastasis. Methods CD44 and CD24 expression was determined by flow cytometry. Northern
