Such substances lifted or emitted are transported and during this process may undergo several transformations and eventually be deposited. Dry deposition refers to the various processes that lead the gases and particles present in the atmosphere to deposit on the ground. Occult deposition is a term covering the little-known deposition processes which are therefore taken into insufficient account in geochemical balances and include the deposition on the ground of gases and particulates contained in fog1 or cloud droplets as they intercept the ground the latter phenomenon generally occurring in mountain areas. Fog and young cloud droplets measuring 10 pm in diameter can be transported to the ground by inertial impact while those originating in more mature clouds have a diameter of at least 1 mm and fall to the ground by gravity.
