He did just that. The city has expanded to be the capital of the world s largest democracy while its spacious core of immaculately designed and executed landmark government and civic buildings throb with activity making New Delhi arguably the most successful planned city of the 20th century. On our journey we have the great good fortune to be accompanied by Lutyens s granddaughter Candia Lutyens who will share insights and family stories. Together we explore the India Lutyens arrived into his views on the subcontinent s 4 000-year-old cultural heritage and what impressed him enough to be incorporated into his great design. We learn about the British government s aspirations for their new capital and how Lutyens rebelled against them -even cheekily changing the location of the new city after the foundation stone had been laid by the King-Emperor George V We see what his team of architects contributed the scandals during the city s creation his breakfast meetings with the horticulturalist who advised on which trees should line each avenue.
