Public transport. Overall Virginia s air quality continues to gradually improve and DEQ continues to take steps to improve air quality. Indeed ambient concentrations of fine particulate matter carbon monoxide nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide in Virginia were meeting all of the national ambient air quality standards during calendar year 2010. However the air quality standards that the Commonwealth must attain are becoming increasingly stringent. In 2010 the . Environmental Protection Agency published lower National Ambient Air Quality Standards NAAQS for sulfur dioxide SO2 and for nitrogen dioxide NO2 . Both of these standards reflect new implementation and monitoring strategies as well as more stringent numerical ambient air quality standards.
