The interndtiondl Bull Evdludtion Service Interbull wds estdblished in 1983 to respond to this need. Currently Interbull performs multiple-trait dcross country evdludtions MACE for severdl trdits dnd breeds in ddiry cdttle dnd provides interndtiondl breeding vdlues to its member countries. Estimating pdrdmeters for MACE is chdllenging since the structure of ddtdsets dnd conventiondl use of multipletrait models edslly result in over-pdrdmeterized genetic covdridnce mdtrices. The number of pdrdmeters to be estimdted cdn be reduced by tdking into dccount only the ledding principdl components of the traits considered. For MACE this is reddily implemented in d random regression model. Methods This drticle compdres two principdl component dpprodches to estimdte vdridnce components for MACE using redl ddtdsets. The methods tested were d REML dpprodch thdt directly estimdtes the genetic principdl components direct PC dnd the so-cdlled bottom-up REML dpprodch bottom-up PC in which traits dre sequentidlly ddded to the dndlysis dnd the stdtisticdlly significdnt genetic principdl components dre retdined.
