As shown in Figs. and the two metal parts are clamped tightly together and they are not supported by the elastomer. As the pressure increases the rubber is pushed into the corner through which leakage would otherwise flow. An elastomer acts much like a fluid so that the effect of pressure on one side is to cause equal pressure on all sides. Thus the elastomer pushes tightly against the metal walls and forms a seal. The limitation of this type of seal is that the rubber will flow or extrude out of the clearance when the pressure is high enough. This is often not a problem for static seals since the gap can be made essentially zero as shown in Fig. which represents a typical way to utilize an elastomeric seal for static sealing.
