TAILIEUCHUNG - Practical GIS Analysis - Chapter 9

Common image sources in GIS are digital orthophotos satellite images aerial video images and scanned documents. Image processing techniques can be very sophisticated and entire software packages for image processing of remotely sensed images exist. Basic image processing operations are available in most GIS systems and are therefore covered in this chapter. These operations include image display and enhancement image rectification unsupervised and supervised image classification and classification accuracy assessment. IMAGE DISPLAY A single band image is a grid with one value in each grid cell. These values are sometimes called digital numbers or DNs in remote sensing. To display a single band image you control your output display intensity with image DNs. Let s start with a simple example. Imagine that you have a display device that can only display in four patterns. 12 3 4 The range of digital numbers for your particular sensor is 0 to 255. Therefore one possible display rule is to use this range to assign pixel display as follows 143 2002 Taylor Francis 144 Practical GIS Analysis The rule from the previous linear function means the following Using the above linear function we could display your digital image as follows 2002 Taylor Francis Image Analysis 145 Imagine that coniferous vegetation has DNs ranging from 80 to 90 and broadleaf vegetation has DNs ranging from 90 to 100. The conifer pixels do not appear different than broadleaf pixels on your displayed image. You could enhance the visual contrast between broadleaf and conifer vegetation by changing the linear contrast function as follows The rule from the previous linear function means the following Input Pixel DN Output Shade 0-80 80-90 90-100 100-255 And apply your linear function to display your digital image in the four output shades Single Band Image 98 96 95
