Government recognises that it is important to invest in flood risk and coastal management and has committed to increase public spending on it from £600 million in 2007-2008 to £800 million in 2010-2011. X A main part of the Environment Agency’s role is to improve and keep in good order over 25,400 miles of flood defences that help to reduce flood risk from rivers and the sea in England.
