TAILIEUCHUNG - Ecological Risk Assessment - Part 3

| Part III Analysis of Exposure Ecological risks occur because organisms are potentially exposed to hazardous agents in a way that could result in effects. Analysis of exposure extends from the identification and characterization of sources Chapter 19 to the estimation of levels of the agent in the environment by either sampling and analysis Chapter 20 or transport and fate modeling Chapter 21 and ends with the estimation of the actual exposure of organisms through contact and uptake Chapter 22 . Ultimately the goal is to characterize exposure in a way that can be integrated with an exposure-response relationship to allow characterization of risk Chapter 23 . The distinction between exposure and response may seem clear but the location of the dividing line is largely a matter of convenience Figure . At one extreme one can treat a release or emission as the exposure . dose to the environment and estimate an exposureresponse relationship for that exposure. This is effectively the case for field tests or mesocosm tests in which a pesticide is applied at a set of rates and responses are observed and recorded as a function of that rate . dead birds ha given kg agent ha . At the other extreme exposure may be taken as occurring in a target tissue or even a receptor molecule. In that case exposure estimation requires the use of toxicokinetic models and response as a function of tissue concentration is expected to be a constant for chemicals with a common mechanism of action. In most cases the line is drawn at an intermediate point. In ecological assessments exposure is most commonly expressed as a concentration in an ambient medium air water sediment or soil and responses are expressed as functions of those concentrations .
