While heavy metals PCBs PAHs dioxins and pesticides have received significant attention other contaminants including cyanide are emerging as concerns. In the United States cyanide has been among the top 30 of the 275 compounds on the CERCLA Priority List of Hazardous Substances since 1995 and also appears on the list of compounds frequently found at Superfund sites. Cyanide is also included in water wastewater and hazardous waste regulations as discussed in Chapter 18.
