INTRODUCTION The history of carbonated soft drinks dates back to the late 1700s when seltzer soda and other waters were first commercially produced. Ingredients for the beverage included coca extracted from the leaves of the Bolivian Coca shrub and cola from the nuts and leaves of the African cola tree. The first Coca-Cola drink was concocted in 1886. Since then the soft drink industry has seen its significant growth. In 1988 the average American s consumption of soft drinks was 174L year this figure has increased to approximately 200 L year in recent years. In 2001 the retail sales of soft drinks in the United States totaled over 61 billion.
