Reduce swelling to a minimum by releasing the tourniquet before suture of the wound where practicable. Never apply a complete plaster after the use of a tourniquet. 9 Release the tourniquet routinely before closing large wounds in order to secure haemostasis. 10 Check carefully that the circulation has returned to all digits after the plaster or bandage has been applied. 11 Seal off the tourniquet from the wound to prevent soaking of padding. 12 Always record the times of application and release of the tourniquet the pressure and the number of the tourniquet used.
