The canal runs for about one kilometer and is some 11 kilometers wide with a depth that would allow ships with a draft of up to meters to pass through the canal. Its sloping sides were lined with wood which has been dated by dendrochronology to c. 726. This date suggests that the canal may have been constructed for the eighth-century king of Denmark Angan-tyr possibly as a way of controlling traffic passing through the Storeb lt to the Baltic Sea.
