Maybe that s why the English school of painting Gainsborough aside said blue should be used just as an accent color to be used here and there. Blue is the coldest color of the spectrum. Its hue tendency can only tip toward the two other cool colors violet and green. It stands to reason that it is the complement of orange the warmest color. The coldness of blue is what poses the greatest painting challenge especially as seen in the light. The presence of light is automatically the presence of warmth we all feel warmer in light than in shade. Therefore when you see a cold color in light you have to warm it up. If you don t it will look flat raw stark. You don t want that do you Blue s complement orange has to come to the rescue to warm it. This is difficult to do without darkening and dulling the blue or turning it green. It s a dilemma all right having to paint a warmed cold color it s what makes painting such a challenge for the landscape painter who realizes that blue is such a suitable background color. When painting somewhat large areas of blue handle with care A little goes a long way toward making it look too blue and once you have painted it in too strongly it s pretty hard to kill. It s much better to sneak up on the blueness of the area in question. This can be done by first painting in the area with a gray made of black and white and a bit of orange Bunt Sienna in the tone that s a little lighter than the blue area is to be. Then ease blue into it. The blue of skies is easier to create if you first paint the area with white and Cadmium Orange. Then disperse blue and white in dabs into that coverage. I strongly suggest that you do the following experiment with the color blue it will teach you how important it is to incorporate orange with it on the upper part of a 16x20 practice canvas paint an area about 8 x 12 of blue that s made of white and Thalo
