Psychological types of a personality according to Eric Burne: –The concept of ego-status –Discernment of ego-status 1 Models of a person’s behavior in different situations: • Structural model = inner composition of human psychology • Functional model = ways of conduct, actions and reactions The concept of ego-status 2 Ego-status consists of • Thinking • Feeling • Acting 3 Ego-status Types • Status Parents-I => a person thinks, acts and feels as his parents do • Status Adults-I => a person makes sober estimations of the reality, collects and comprehends facts objectively • Status Child-I => a person feels and acts as in childhood 4 Status Parents-I Critical Feeding-Considerate Parents-I Parents-I 5 Status Child-I Adaptable Child Rebellious Child-I Free Child 6 Discernment of Ego-Status: Critical Parents-I Characteristic Features of Behavior: • Automatically evaluating; • Ironic, reproaching, blaming; • Looking for the guilty, punishing; • Ordering, authoritative, banning; • Dogmatic, claiming being always right 7 Discernment of Ego-Status: Feeding-Considerate Parents-I Characteristic Features of Behavior: • Kind, encouraging, grateful; • Considerate, sympathizing, consoling; • Protective, supporting, advising, helpful; • Understanding, patronizing; • Over considerate 8 Discernment of Ego-Status: Adults-I Characteristic Features of Behavior: • Liberated, objective, emotionless; • Attentive, interested, concentrated; • Listening to an interlocutor; • Putting forward and choosing alternatives; • Cooperative 9 Discernment of Ego-Status: Free Child-I Characteristic Features of Behavior: • Spontaneous, impatient, full of energy; • Inquisitive, creative, inventive; • Inspired, joyful, teasing; • Dreaming; • Egoistic 10 Discernment of Ego-Status: Adaptable Child-I Characteristic Features of Behavior: • Cautious, conserved, thinking about consequences; • Feeling shame, fault, demanding much of oneself; • Timid, modest, obedient; • Dreaming, helpless, insulted; • Asking for approval 11 Discernment of Ego-Status: Rebellious Child-I Characteristic Features of Behavior: • Protest against stronger and more authoritative people; • Naughty, self-willing, disobedient; • Rough, unpleasant, angry, aggressive; • Contradicting other people; 12 To determine the ego-status you need: To observe a partner’s intonation, behavior, face expression, gesture, body position 13 Practical Advice • There is neither bad nor good ego-status. To make communication successful you should master each of them. • Check if you are able to recognize and deal with each ego-status in conflict situations. • Find out which ego-status you prefer in a conflict situation. Think of possible alternatives. • Try practicing a more constructive desirable ego-status 14 Practical Advice • Avoid super-critical status parents-I. It is destructive and useless for efficient communication. • If you are in the rebellious child-I status, analyze what business counter arguments you have or why not agree with the situation. • Think of the ego-status which can best help you eliminate the conflict and develop the effective strategy. 15 Practical Advice Remember: You cannot experiment with two strategies simultaneously.
