Brief synopses of these topics are presented in the text however where they are appropriate. Software Development Targets PDSPs were developed as specialized microprocessors in the late 1970s in response to the needs of speech processing algorithms and the vast majority of these devices have remained to this day basically audio-rate and hence speech processing devices 1 5 . These processors present a unique venue in which to both examine and implement speech processing algorithms since even a cursory examination of the device architectures quickly reveals the strong synergy between PDSP features and speech processing algorithms. As a result specialized but restricted software development skills are necessary to realize speech processing algorithms on these devices.
