It is interesting to note that the United Kingdom and other European countries first accepted the ISO 9000 registration process wholeheartedly while only recently beginning to create national quality awards. In the United States the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award was the first of these external influences to gain support. The ISO 9000 standard met with strong resistance in the United States and is only now gaining in As companies engage in the process of achieving certifications registrations and awards mechanical engineers may be asked to participate assisting their companies in preparations for a certification audit or writing sections of an award application.
