TAILIEUCHUNG - Tribe cryptotympanini (hemiptera: cicadidae) from Vietnam, with key to species

This tribe is distinguished from the allied Platypleurini by having a broad head that is as wide or wider than the pronotum (that of the Platypleurini is narrower, usually much narrower), and the head, thorax and abdomen are “normal” (unlike those of the Platypleurini which are compressed dorso-ventrally). Distinguished from the allied Thophini by the male timbal covers that are flat (those of the Thophini are swollen and sack-like); females are not distinguishable. | HỘI NGHỊ KHOA HỌC TOÀN QUỐC VỀ SINH THÁI VÀ TÀI NGUYÊN SINH VẬT LẦN THỨ 4 TRIBE CRYPTOTYMPANINI (HEMIPTERA: CICADIDAE) FROM VIETNAM, WITH KEY TO SPECIES PHAM HONG THAI Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources JENG-TZE YANG National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan INTRODUCTION The tribe Crytotympanini includes 19 genera. They are distributed in all zoogeographical regions except continental Africa. Among them, 3 genera are recoreded in Vietnam (Chremistica Stål, 1870; Cryptotympana Stål, 1861 and Salvazana Distant, 1913). MATERIALS AND METHOD Specimens were collected by netting and light trapping. Previously collected specimens were included in our evaluations. Specimens are deposited at the Department of Insect Systematics of the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources, Hanoi, and the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris. The tribal classification of this study is based on Moulds (2005). Names of genus and species, as well as synonymies, follow the catalogues of Metcalf (1963) and Lee (2008). The nomenclature of the different parts of the body follows Moulds (2005). Examined specimens are listed by provinces (given in bold). The following acronyms are used: IEBR (Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources), MNHN (Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris), NP (National Park), NR (Natural Reserve), RBINS (Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences). Taxonomy Family Cicadidae Subfamily Cicadinae Tribe Cryptotympanini Handlirsch, 1925 Type genus. Cryptotympana Stal. Distribution.
