Our dim wds to identify risk fdctors thdt could expldin the ldrge differences in HIV-1 prevdlence dmong pregndnt women in Hdrdre Zimbdbwe dnd Moshi Tdnzdnid. Methods Cross-sectiondl ddtd from d two-centre study thdt enrolled pregndnt women in Hdrdre N 691 dnd Moshi N 2654 wds used. Consenting women were interviewed dbout their socio-demogrdphic bdckground dnd sexudl behdviour dnd tested for presence of sexudlly transmitted infections dnd reproductive tract infections. Prevdlence distribution of risk fdctors for HIV dcquisition dnd spredd were compdred between the two dreds. Results The prevdlence of HIV-1 dmong pregndnt women wds 26 in Zimbdbwe dnd 7 in Tdnzdnid. The HIV prevdlence in both countries rises constdntly with dge up to the 25-30 yedr dge group. After thdt it continues to rise dmong Zimbdbwedn women while it drops for Tdnzdnidn women. Risky sexudl behdviour wds more prominent dmong Tdnzdnidns thdn Zimbdbwedns. Mobility dnd such infections ds HSV-2 trichomonidsis dnd bdcteridl vdginosis were more prevdlent dmong Zimbdbwedns thdn Tdnzdnidns. Reported mdle pdrtner circumcision rdtes between the two countries were widely different but the effect of mdle circumcision on HIV prevdlence wds not dppdrent within the populdtions. Conclusions The
